Things to know before booking Copenhagen canal tours

  • Most canal cruises start at Nyhavn or Ved Stranden. However, the one-hour canal cruise offers the option to choose your departure point between Nyhavn or Ved Stranden.
  • Want a more in-depth experience? A guided tour is definitely worth the extra cash.
  • If you're in a wheelchair, canal cruises might not be the best option to explore the city. But don't worry, the hop-on hop-off buses are wheelchair accessible.
  • Need to change your plans? You can cancel both cruises up to 24 hours in advance and get your money back. However, you cannot cancel the hop-on hop-off bus tours.
  • Although you can choose between the 24-hour and 48-hour HOHO bus ride, only the 24-hour bus tour can be upgraded to include the canal cruise.

copenhagen canal tours
  • Peak hours can see a wait line for up to 45 minutes. Factor in the extra time, especially if you've combined your cruise with a HOHO bus.
  • Arrive 15-30 minutes early to snag the best spot on the boat in the front rows, especially if you want to hear the guide clearly. It’ll also give you enough time to walk to the boat from the visitor desk kiosk.
  • Choose an open boat if the weather permits for the best photo opportunities.
  • Save some cash. If you have a Copenhagen City Card, your canal cruise is included!
  • If you're short on time or have someone in your group who can't walk much, the hop-on hop-off bus and boat combo is a great choice! You can see a lot of the city without tiring yourselves out, and it's really good value for money.
  • Look out for the impressive Frederick’s Church (Marble Church) dome visible in the background when you spot Amalienborg Palace, framed perfectly between the palace buildings.
  • Copenhagen canal tours are the only place where you can see unobstructed views of the Opera House’s cantilevered roof, the Old Stock Exchange Spire with intertwined dragon tails, and Circle Bridge’s circular platforms.
  • It’s best to dress in layers. A jacket or sweater will keep you comfortable, no matter what the weather. Opt for comfortable shoes, as you might walk to and from the cruise departure point.
  • If there’s a chance of rain, bring a small, packable umbrella or wear a waterproof jacket.
  • Many canal cruises start and end in areas that are worth exploring on foot. Plan some time to walk around Nyhavn, Christianshavn, or the nearby streets to continue enjoying Copenhagen’s charm after the cruise.
